Shamarra Alpaca farm, located on the western side of Akaroa Harbour, and only 20 minutes from Akaroa, is home to a herd of over 70 alpacas.  The farm is situated two hundred metres above the harbour and boasts breathtaking panoramic views from the Akaroa Heads to the south,  and all the way to Barry’s Bay at the north end of the harbour.

Frank and Anya have farmed alpacas since 2004, after moving to New Zealand from the Caribbean.  They are passionate about their alpacas and look forward to sharing their considerable knowledge with you.

Driving up to the big red barn you’ll enjoy stunning sights of the harbour.  Upon arrival, you’ll be treated to an informative and interactive introduction to alpacas.

Our friendly alpacas will be in pens for you to get up close to and appreciate their unique characteristics and their ultra fine fleece.  A few alpacas will be on halters and you will have an opportunity to lead an alpaca.  After a hands on fibre presentation, you can take a wander around the paddocks and get to enjoy these majestic creatures grazing contentedly  in their natural environment.  Each alpaca has a name, and Anya remembers them all!

Finally you will  have time to browse the Alpaca Shop where handcrafted NZ alpaca     products are for sale, including items knitted from their very own fleece.

Complimentary beverages and home baking will be provided.
